Important Safety Note
Most scanner flags are ingredient-quality or formula-pattern flags, not emergency warnings. However, some ingredients are in a different category because they may be unsafe, inappropriate, or legally restricted for cats.
Purrwise treats known or suspected cat hazards differently from ordinary caution ingredients. If a label includes ingredients such as propylene glycol, ethoxyquin, xylitol, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, or other known pet toxins, the scanner should clearly flag them as safety concerns and recommend contacting a veterinarian or pet poison control when appropriate.
For suspected poisoning, sudden illness, or accidental exposure, do not rely on the scanner. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency vet, or pet poison control.

Our Ingredient Philosophy
Purrwise generally prefers simpler, more transparent formulas when possible. Processing is normal in commercial cat food, and complete diets often require added nutrients.
However, Purrwise gives preference to foods built around clearly named animal ingredients, moisture, and transparent sourcing rather than formulas that rely heavily on rendered meals, vague ingredients, plant protein concentrates, starch-heavy fillers, artificial colors, or long premix-heavy ingredient lists.
What the Scanner Verdicts Mean
This ingredient or formula pattern aligns well with Purrwise standards. It usually means the food includes clearer animal-based ingredients, moisture, or better transparency.
This is not automatically a problem. The meaning depends on where the ingredient appears on the label, how much plant or processed material is stacked around it, and your cat's individual needs.
This ingredient or pattern is worth noticing. It may be more processed, less transparent, plant-heavy, or less aligned with a carnivore-first diet. A caution flag does not mean the food is toxic or unsafe.
This is a stronger caution. It may involve vague ingredients, rendered meals, plant protein concentrates, heavy starch stacking, artificial additives, or a formula that looks overly dependent on added nutrient premix. Review the full label before relying on this food.
This is reserved for ingredients or exposures that may be unsafe for cats, medically inappropriate, or associated with poisoning or serious risk. If your cat may have eaten a toxin or is showing symptoms, contact a veterinarian or pet poison control.
